My daddy was a preacher
Not a reckless man
White collar round his neck
A bible in his hand
And he taught me right from wrong
And he washed me in the water
But there was no escaping
That I was a preacher’s daughter

I swore up and down
No promise would be broken
But that’s before he caught me
on the roof where I was smokin’
And he yanked me through that window
And his face couldn’t get any hotter
He said girl you gotta do better
Don’t you know you’re a preacher’s daughter

I promised to get right
I promised to be good
But that before I noticed
That boy in the neighborhood

And I knew that I was tempted
To go where I shouldn’t oughta
And engage in some behavior
Unfit for a preacher’s daughter

Next time I saw my daddy
We were standing in his church
Like two escapee criminals hiding from a search
Had the Bible in his right hand
And a shotgun in the other
And nobody objected, it’s expected
from a preacher’s daughter

I vowed I would be faithful
I vowed I would be true
But that’s before I noticed
The young man in the pew

And I knew that I was tempted
And I split right from the alter
Now I’m done with my confessin’
‘Cuz that’s what you get when
You’re the preacher’s daughter
